TL;DR
What makes a mattress the best rated mattress? Is it the comfort, support, materials, or durability? So, let's talk about that.
I’m gonna nerd out a bit and tell you the history of mattresses. Mattresses have gone through a series of evolutions. The word mattress comes from Arabic “maáąraḥ” which means "something thrown down". The word “materas” eventually descended into Middle English.
The earlier mattresses contained a variety of natural materials including straw, feathers or horsehair. THAT’S RIGHT! HORSEHAIR! Nowadays, modern mattresses usually contain foam, latex and coils, less olden times… more modern and probably won’t have bugs in it.
Anyhooo, so you're looking for the best rated mattress right?? But what does that even mean? Is it a fancy mattress with “cooling gel” or that “organic” label that everybody gets hyped over? Nope. A mattress earns “best rated” status when it checks all the boxes of comfort, support, and longevity. Now, why don’t we break down the features that separate the quality mattresses from the overpriced money eaters?
If you’re waking up feeling like an elephant gave you a massage, your mattress is failing you. You probably need a mattress that provides zoned support. The firmer support the better it will hold you up. Look for pocketed coils or high-density foam that keeps your spine aligned.
Are you a side sleeper? Go for softer top layers that feel like clouds. How about back sleepers? You’ll want firmer support to avoid the dreaded sag. Same with stomach sleepers. You're gonna need that extra support.
Now how about comfort? You know those mattresses that feel like you’re sleeping on a pile of sheep until your back starts screaming at you like a goat after a week? That’s a comfort trap. The best mattress balances comfort and support. When choosing a mattress, you’ll often see options like memory foam and hybrid mattresses (a mix of foam and coils). Hybrids tend to hit the sweet spot between support and comfort. Bonus points if it has a pillow top for that extra plush feel.
Do you sleep hot? Working out can increase your body. Unless you enjoy waking up in a pool of sweat, you’ll want a mattress that breathes and keeps you cool at night.
Memory foam has a reputation for trapping heat. Fortunately, memory foam got buff with the gel infusion or open-cell foam design. Natural latex also stays cool and is eco-friendly (if you’re into that). They’re super bouncy tho. Hybrid mattresses with airflow channels between coils, amazing for temperature regulation.
With all this talk of quality, durability also plays a part here. Great quality mattresses should last at least 7–10 years. High-quality materials matter. Natural latex is more expensive than polyfoam. High-density foam is way more durable than low-density foam. Pocketed coils are quieter than bonnell coils. If a mattress starts sagging after 18 months, RUN. THAT IS NOT FOR YOU!
If you’re sharing a bed with a partner, congrats! Having a partner is great, until they start moving around and you can feel EVERYTHING. Motion isolation in a mattress is very important. So imagine you’re in bed with your partner, and they wake you up in the middle of the night, because they changed positions a lot. With motion isolation, you can sleep without getting disturbed.
Another thing couples would want is good edge support. High-density foams or reinforced coils keep mattresses from collapsing near the edge. If you can sit on the bed without sliding off like slip n’ slide then that’s some good edge support.
Okay, we’ve covered all the features but what about the trial and warranty? A mattress is a huge commitment, they cost about $500 to $2000. What if I don’t like it? Am I stuck with this terrible purchase? Well most mattresses come with trial periods and warranties. 100 night trial periods are key, you have enough time to get to know the mattress and decide.
Warranties for mattresses have the 10 year limited standard. Some can go as high as 15 and the hefty ones are 25. But what’s real cake is the LIFETIME WARRANTY.
